In August, our fifth graders welcomed the beauty and traditions of Kerala through a joyful celebration of Onam! Together, we created a colorful pookalam, heard the story of King Mahabali, sang, played traditional games, tried on traditional clothing including a sari and mundu, created Onam cards and shared a mini-sadhya served on banana leaves. We were especially grateful to welcome a guest from Kerala, who shared stories of growing up in India, introduced the children to Malayalam language and culture, and taught them to write Happy Onam in the graceful, rounded forms of Malayalam script! The Power of Rhythm in Learning ✨ At Sunrise School of Miami, rhythm is woven into every school day—from the youngest children in Early Childhood through the upper grades. For young children, a predictable rhythm helps create a sense of security and belonging. Knowing what comes next allows them to settle into the day, feel at ease, and gradually develop confidence and independence. As children grow, rhythm continues to support them in a different way. A well-established daily and weekly rhythm helps students organize themselves, transition between activities, and approach their work with greater focus and purpose. We think of rhythm much like breathing in and breathing out. There are moments that call for focus, concentration, and inward attention, followed by moments of movement, connection, creativity, and expansion. This natural alternation helps children stay engaged without becoming overwhelmed or depleted. Our teachers intentionally use music, movement, verses, songs, games, and familiar routines to create these transitions throughout the day. A song might bring the group together, a movement game might help release energy, and a quiet activity might invite children to settle and concentrate. Rhythm is not about making every day the same. It is about creating a dependable framework with a healthy balance between contraction and expansion, focus and movement, stillness and activity. The first day of the 2026–2027 school year began with one of our most meaningful traditions: the Rose Ceremony. Gathered in the sanctuary, our faculty, students, and families celebrated as our rising first graders marked the beautiful transition from kindergarten into grade school. The children walked beneath rainbow silks, crossed the wooden bridge, and received a rose from an eighth grade student before being welcomed by their new first grade teacher, Rocío Sixto. The rose carries a simple and beautiful message: each child is like a flower, unfolding in their own time. 🌱🌹 There is also something deeply special about the older students presenting the roses. The gesture creates a sense of continuity and belonging—those who came before welcome those who are beginning their journey, and one day, these first graders will have the opportunity to welcome the children who come after them. We are proud to celebrate our 4th Grade teacher, Mr. Alberto “Tico” Aran, on the completion of his three-year teacher certification program at Rudolf Steiner College Canada @rscc_canada . Completing this journey is no small accomplishment. While teaching full-time, Mr. Tico dedicated himself to years of study, artistic work, summer intensives, weekend courses, and the ongoing practice of deepening his understanding of child development and education. At Sunrise School of Miami, this level of teacher training is required for all lead teachers. Through credentialed teacher education programs and continuing professional development, our faculty engage in rigorous study and lifelong learning to bring greater insight, creativity, and intention to their work with students. Why a Mixed-Age Kindergarten? 🌿✨ In our kindergarten, children ages 4–6 learn and grow together in a warm, home-like environment where each child is met according to their stage of development. The younger children are inspired by the confidence and capabilities of the older children, while the older children naturally develop leadership, empathy, and a sense of responsibility as they help guide the younger ones. Although the children share the same classroom community, expectations are thoughtfully tailored to each child’s age and readiness. Kindergarten is an extension of home life—a place where children learn through imitation, imagination, meaningful work, play, stories, songs, and daily rhythms that nurture their growing bodies, minds, and hearts.
